Sometime in July, while you were still planning around a cookout, beauty retailers started collecting email addresses for a cardboard box.

That's not a bit. Space NK's waitlist for its 2025 advent calendar was up 60% over the year before, and the calendar sold out in two and a half weeks. Sephora's UK flagship has sold out four years running, according to The Independent's launch coverage. The US side looks the same: when I checked on October 15, both versions of Sephora's $105 25 Days of Beauty Must Haves calendar were already listed as out of stock.

The advent calendar used to be a $2 chocolate thing for kids. Now it has a waitlist, a launch day, and a resale tab on eBay. So if one is on your gift list this year, you're not buying a snack. You're buying 24 tiny presents, and the only number that matters is what each door costs.

The math your group chat skipped: cost per door

Divide the price by the number of doors. That's it. That's the whole trick.

Aldi's Kinder countdown calendar was $6.99 last year, which works out to about 29 cents a day. Its 25-candle calendar was $39.99, so roughly $1.60 a door. Sephora's $99 Premium Advent Calendar has 24 surprises, so about $4.13 a door, and its $105 Favorites box has 25, so about $4.20.
