It’s Tuesday, Halloween is Saturday, and you have not bought candy, a costume, or one single fun-size anything. Good. You’re free.
Some of us would rather spend the night on the couch with the lights low, watching something tense that has nothing to do with the holiday.
No ghosts. No jump scares timed to a cello. If your favorite Halloween movies on Netflix are the ones that never mention Halloween, add these to your list.
It’s not that I don’t like Halloween, I just want something else to watch. I haven’t been excited about a Halloween movie in a very long time, show me something good, and I’ll gladly watch it.
With that said, I pulled 16 picks, sorted them by mood, and gave each one a trailer link and a spook-o-meter (spooky as in crazy, creepy, mind-bending, intense, or whatever it means to you).
One of them has a deadline: Nightcrawler’s last night on Netflix is Halloween itself. Start there if you’re short on time.
Note: In the finder the "Tension Level" referrs to the alternative of being spooky
Movie Night: Sleek, Tense, and Two Hours Long
Five films for people who want a full story and an ending by bedtime.
1. Nightcrawler
Leaving Netflix Nov. 1 (last night: Oct. 31) · 2014 · 1h 57m · Tension Levelensio: ●●●●○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a petty thief who figures out that local TV news will pay good money for footage of the worst night of someone else’s life, as long as he gets there first.
So he starts getting there first. Dan Gilroy’s 2014 debut earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, sits around 95% with critics, and surrounds Gyllenhaal with Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed and Bill Paxton.
You could say this is a horror movie about hustle culture. Lou has no boss, no training, and a conscience he’s decided is optional. The scary part is how well it works for him. Netflix lists it as gone on Nov. 1, which makes Halloween night your last shot.
2. The Killer
2023 · 1h 58m · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
David Fincher’s 2023 thriller follows a professional (Michael Fassbender) who lives by a strict set of rules, repeats them to himself, and listens to The Smiths while he works. Then one job goes sideways, and the rules go out the window.
The script comes from Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker, adapted from a French graphic novel by Alexis “Matz” Nolent and Luc Jacamon.
It’s cold on purpose, and some viewers find it a little too tidy. If you like movies that play better on headphones in a dark room, this is it, and it doesn’t waste a minute.
Read the graphic novel afterward if you want to see what Fincher kept.
3. Reptile
2023 · 2h 14m · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Benicio del Toro co-wrote this one (his first screenplay credit) and stars as Detective Tom Nichols, a veteran cop whose latest case keeps drifting toward a wealthy family and a very polite Justin Timberlake.
Alicia Silverstone plays his wife, and Grant Singer, a longtime music video director, makes his feature debut behind the camera.
It might be short for some since it’s runtime is only 134 minutes, it’s slow on purpose, and critics were split on whether that’s a feature.
It still shot to the top of Netflix’s charts when it dropped in late September 2023.
4. Animals
New Oct. 9 · 2026 · 1h 48m · Spook-o-meter: ●●●●○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Ben Affleck directs, co-writes and stars as Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is taken. Kerry Washington plays his wife, Abigail, with Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun in the mix.
It’s rated R, runs 108 minutes, and hit Netflix on Oct. 9.
Fair warning: reviews have been rough, and at least one outlet called it a rare misfire for Affleck despite that cast. It also landed at No. 1 on Netflix, so plenty of you are watching anyway.
I’m not a fan of Affleck’s, but he makes some good movies. The Rip (also on Netflix), The Town, Gone Girl…all great movies.
If you like a short, tense, slightly messy thriller, press play and decide for yourself.
5. Gladiator II
New on U.S. Netflix Oct. 21 · 2024 · 2h 28m · Spook-o-meter: ●●○○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Not scary. Not even a little. For a bit of nostalgia and to finish off the story because the first movie was EPIC!
It’s on this list because it’s loud, it’s enormous, and Denzel Washington’s and Paul Mescal are in it.
Ridley Scott’s sequel, with Paul Mescal in the lead, arrived on U.S. Netflix on Oct. 21, and the original Gladiator came along for the ride.
Reviews were mixed, and rightly so. People liked the scale and Washington’s performance more than the story. At 148 minutes it eats an evening, and the first film adds about 155 more if you’re feeling ambitious.
Pick this when you want an event.
Closest Thing to Actually Spooky
Two picks for the people who secretly still want a little fog, heavy breathing, and a chase through the forest.
6. From
Seasons 1-3 on U.S. Netflix since Oct. 19 · 30 episodes · Spook-o-meter: ●●●●● Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
This is the one that’s actually spooky, so consider yourself warned. A group of strangers are stuck in a small town they can’t leave, and when the sun goes down, something comes out of the woods and tries to get inside.
Seasons 1 through 3 were in the top 10 within two days. Season 4 stays on MGM+, and a fifth and final season is expected in 2027.
Harold Perrineau (Michael from Lost) leads as Boyd Stevens, the town’s self-appointed sheriff, and the show is as much about people trying to stay decent under pressure as it is about what’s outside. Critics have rated every season in the 90s.
7. The Baztan Trilogy
Three Spanish films · 2017-2020 · Spook-o-meter: ●●●●○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Three films adapt Dolores Redondo’s bestselling novels. Inspector Amaia Salazar goes back to the Baztán Valley in Spain’s Basque Country, where the forest, the folklore and her own family history all want something from her.
Watch them in order: The Invisible Guardian, The Legacy of the Bones, then Offering to the Storm.
Think damp, gothic and moody, with a hint of the supernatural at the edges.
For all of my international picks, I suggest you watch them in their natural language and turn on subtitles.
They are waayyyy better this way; they feel more intense and provide a better overall experience, but I get it if you don’t want to read; it can be distracting when you just want to take in the environment and everything that’s going on visually…
The trilogy is the perfect non Halloween pick
If you finish wanting more, Redondo’s books are waiting.
Whodunits to Binge and Discuss After
8. His & Hers
Limited series · 6 episodes · Jan. 8, 2026 · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Tessa Thompson stars as Anna, a former news anchor in Atlanta who has pulled away from her career and her friends, then gets pulled back by a case in her hometown.
Jon Bernthal plays Jack, the detective working it, who is also her estranged husband. It’s six episodes from director William Oldroyd, adapted from Alice Feeney’s novel.
Two things stand out. Thompson also executive produces. And it is big: by Netflix’s own first-half numbers, His & Hers and Bridgerton season 4 were the only 2026 releases to pass 100 million views. Critics split on whether it’s smart or just grim, but nearly everyone agreed on the ending.
9. Untamed
Limited series · 6 episodes · Season 2 in production · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Eric Bana plays Kyle Turner, a National Park Service investigator pulled into a case at Yosemite that gets stranger the longer he looks.
Creator Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, American Primeval) runs it with his daughter Elle Smith, and the cast includes Lily Santiago, Sam Neill and Rosemarie DeWitt. The scenery does half the work.
It was planned as one season, then Netflix renewed it after a No. 1 debut. Season 2 sends Turner to a new park with a new case, with Shea Whigham and Kelly Hu joining. Rotten Tomatoes has season 1 around 80%, which sounds right for a solid, scenic mystery you can watch with a snack.
9 episodes · Premiered March 26, 2026 · Spook-o-meter: ●●●●○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole novels finally get a series worth your time. Tobias Santelmann stars as the troubled Oslo detective in nine episodes adapted from the fifth book, The Devil’s Star, with Nesbø writing and showrunning it himself.
Joel Kinnaman plays Tom Waaler, the polished colleague Hole is sure is dirty, and he goes all in. Critics rated it around 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fun fact: Joel Kinnaman is doing his own voice-over for the role.
11. Everything Harlan Coben (Even the International Titles)
13 shows · UK, Poland, Spain, France, Argentina and the U.S. · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Browse on Netflix · ▶Trailer
Harlan Coben’s Netflix deal has turned into the streamer’s most reliable twist factory: 13 adaptations and counting.
Most are British (Fool Me Once, The Stranger, Stay Close, Run Away), and the rest come from Poland, Spain, France and Argentina, so there’s a subtitled option for any mood. The newest, I Will Find You, is the first one set in the U.S.
The numbers are wild. Run Away and I Will Find You together pulled in 114 million views in the first half of 2026, and I Will Find You has since climbed into Netflix’s all-time top 10.
New to Coben? Start with Fool Me Once (his biggest hit) or The Stranger (the one many fans credit with kicking the deal into gear). If you go international, watch The Woods before Hold Tight, since they’re connected.
Bonus: Michael C. Hall (Dexter) stars in Safe, and he’s in another pick further down this list.
The books are right here if you’d rather read the twist first.
The World Is Not Fine
For the people whose idea of scary is a tech and doomsday dread fest.
12. Leave the World Behind
2023 · 2h 18m · Spook-o-meter: ●●●●○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Sam Esmail (the Mr. Robot creator) wrote and directed this adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s National Book Award finalist novel.
Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke rent a luxury house for a quiet weekend, then two strangers (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la) knock at night, say the house is theirs, and ask for shelter as the world outside goes sideways. A cyberattack is the suspect, and nobody can quite prove it.
What sticks is the tension between the two families: race, class and who gets trusted in a crisis, none of it wrapped up neatly. It was backed by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground, which is a real flex for a movie about nobody having bars.
For an even quieter version, read the novel.
13. Black Mirror
7 seasons · Season 8 in production · Spook-o-meter: ●●●●○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Charlie Brooker’s anthology about technology going sideways has seven seasons on Netflix, and since every episode is a standalone story, you can start anywhere.
Season 7 landed in April 2025, and Netflix confirmed in August that season 8 is in production, with no release date yet.
Need a starter episode? San Junipero is the warm one and a fan favorite, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Hang the DJ is the romantic one. Common People from season 7 is about a subscription service that looks a lot like your streaming bill, with much higher stakes.
14. 3 Body Problem
Season 1: 8 episodes · Season 2 expected · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo from Liu Cixin’s novels, this big sci-fi swing follows a group of scientists as strange things start happening to the rules of physics and something unseen takes notice of Earth.
The cast includes Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, Benedict Wong, Liam Cunningham and Jess Hong.
Season 2 wrapped filming in early 2026, reportedly at six episodes, and Netflix has said it’s coming this year, but I couldn’t find a confirmed premiere date as of this week. Catch up on season 1 now so you’re ready.
The books are a lot, in a good way.
Time Is Weird Here
Two picks that are total mind-benders.
15. In the Shadow of the Moon
2019 · 1h 55m · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
Boyd Holbrook plays Thomas Lockhart, a Philadelphia cop in 1988 who becomes fixated on a string of unexplained incidents that seem to repeat every nine years.
Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Bokeem Woodbine and Cleopatra Coleman round out the cast, and Jim Mickle directs.
It’s a time-travel crime story that hops across decades.
It’s a little bumpy, and some reviewers thought the supporting cast was underused. But the idea is strong, and the ending gives you something to talk about.
16. Bodies
Limited series · 8 episodes · 2023 · Spook-o-meter: ●●●○○ Watch on Netflix · ▶ Trailer
One mystery, four detectives, four eras. In the same stretch of London, the same puzzling discovery turns up in 1890, 1941, 2023 and 2053, and each detective gets pulled into it.
Paul Tomalin created the eight-part series from Si Spencer’s graphic novel, and the cast includes Kyle Soller, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Amaka Okafor, Shira Haas and Stephen Graham.
Amaka Okafor plays DS Hasan in the 2023 thread, and she’s a big reason the modern timeline hums. The series is dedicated to Spencer, who passed away in 2021.
