Warehouse Club Memberships Compared

Costco vs Sam’s Club vs BJ’s 2026. Which One Pays For Itself?

You can't work for Twitter, Elon Musk is different

Sam’s Club raised its membership price on May 1. BJ’s went up in January 2025. Costco went up in September 2024.

All three warehouse clubs quietly raised the cost of walking in the door inside an 18-month window, and almost nobody made a scene about it, because everybody was too busy filming the haul.

The hashtag #CostcoFinds has billions of views. There are accounts with a million-plus followers whose entire job is walking you down aisle 12.

The Wall Street Journal called Costco a consumer monoculture, which is a fancy way of saying it’s one of maybe four things left that your cousin, your coworker and your landlord all know about it.

Now the actual math on which membership card earns its spot on your list of bills in 2026.

What the door charge costs right now

Costco is $65 for Gold Star and $130 for Executive. Sam’s Club is $60 for Club and $120 for Plus as of May 1, 2026, up $10 on both tiers. BJ’s is $60 for Club and $120 for Club+, where it’s been since the start of 2025.

So the base tiers are within five dollars of each other, and the upgrade tiers are within ten.

Anyone telling you one club is dramatically cheaper to join is comparing a promo rate to a standard rate.

What separates them is the rewards cap on the upgrade tier.

Costco’s 2% Executive reward maxes out at $1,250 a year. Sam’s Club Plus caps at $750, raised from $500 with this year’s increase. BJ’s Club+ still caps at $500.

Same 2% with wildly different ceilings.

The fee is the easy part. Gas is where it really pays itself back

This gets buried under every rotisserie chicken debate: for a lot of households, the membership pays for itself at the pump before a single item hits their cart.

Let’s run it.

One car driving about 12,000 miles a year at 25 miles per gallon burns roughly 480 gallons.

Costco warehouses commonly post 20 to 40 cents below the regional average. At 25 cents, that’s $120 a year on one car. Your $65 Gold Star fee is covered in July, and everything after is profit.

BJ’s says its members average about 20 cents a gallon, and Club+ knocks off another nickel.

Two cars, a commute, a club you drive past anyway, the groceries stop being the main argument.

The catch though, is geography, and it’s a real big one.

If the closest club is 25 minutes each way, you’re burning the savings to collect the savings. Check your local club against GasBuddy before you let anybody, including this article, do your math for you.

The 2% upgrade only works past one number

Every club will happily upsell you to the premium tier. The premium tier costs exactly $60 more than the base tier at all three. At 2% back, $60 of rewards requires $3,000 of qualifying spend a year.

That’s $250 a month, every month, at one store.

Costco’s break-even is slightly worse, around $3,250, because the fee gap is $65 and because gas, food court, and alcohol in a lot of states don’t count toward the reward.

Yes, the two things you buy most reliably are often the two things that don’t earn you anything.

Costco did sweeten the deal in 2026. Executive members get in at 9 a.m. before the general public, and there’s a $10 monthly credit on same-day delivery orders over $150.

Used every month, that credit alone is $120 against a $130 fee. If you already get groceries delivered, that changes the entire conversation.

On the other hand, if you’ve never once ordered a $150 delivery, it’s a coupon for a life you don’t live.

Costco is the quality tax. Sam’s is the convenience play. BJ’s is the coupon loophole

Costco has about 4,000 items, for a reason. Fewer choices, all vetted.

While Kirkland Signature is doing the heavy lifting as a store brand people actually request by name.

You’re paying a small premium in fees and a real premium in parking lot chaos for the highest floor on quality and the deepest gas discount.

Sam’s Club is building something different.

It’s pulling checkout lanes out of all 600 clubs in favor of Scan & Go, where you scan with your phone and walk through an archway that uses cameras and AI to confirm your cart on the way out. No line, no receipt check, no person with a highlighter.

The Grapevine, Texas club is the template for the remodel. If the part of warehouse shopping you hate is the 20 minutes at the front, Sam’s is quietly solving your problem.

BJ’s is the smallest of the three at roughly 250 clubs, mostly on the East Coast, and now pushing into Texas. It’s also the only one of the three that takes manufacturer coupons on top of club pricing.

Stacking a coupon on a bulk price is a genuinely different game than the other two are playing, and the reason BJ’s regulars get defensive in the comments.

The hidden gems

Nobody pays full price the first year!

Sam’s Club and BJ’s run first-year deals through Groupon and StackSocial constantly, sometimes down to $15 or $20. Costco almost never discounts the fee itself, but partners bundle $20 to $40 Shop Cards with a new membership, which is basically the same thing.

The household card is free. All three include a second card for someone at your address.

The fee is refundable. Costco will refund your membership fee if you’re not satisfied, full stop. Sam’s and BJ’s have their own satisfaction guarantees. Join at the promo rate, shop for four months, decide honestly.

Set a renewal reminder now. Promo memberships auto-renew at the full standard rate with no real warning. That $20 BJ’s deal becomes a $60 charge on a random Tuesday. Put a calendar alert 60 days out and make the decision for yourself.

Downgrading is allowed.

If your Executive or Plus reward certificate came back under $60 last year, that tier is costing you money to hold. Walk to the desk and drop it down a tier.

So which one pays for itself?

If you drive a lot and you’re near a Costco. Gas plus the $1,250 reward ceiling plus the delivery credit means an Executive membership can clear its own fee three times over without you trying.

If you hate the line more than you love the discount, Sam’s Club it is. Scan & Go is the most underrated perk in the grocery shopping category.

If you’re an East Coast couponer with a mid-size household, try BJ’s. The coupon stack beats the higher rewards cap you were never going to hit anyway.

And if you’re spending under about $200 a month at any of them, none of them may seem like a deal for you. Stay on the base tier or skip the whole thing.

The clubs all figured out the same thing at the same time: you’re not really paying for bulk anymore, you’re paying a subscription with a parking lot attached.

Make it earn the line on your statement, same as every subscription you forgot you were paying for.
